CELEBREX (pronounced
sell'-uh-brex) is designed for the relief of pain and inflammation
associated with osteoarthritis (OA) and adult rheumatoid arthritis
(RA). It was introduced in the United States in early 1999, and since
then there have been millions of CELEBREX prescriptions written. CELEBREX
is the #1 selling brand of prescription arthritis medication. CELEBREX
effectively reduces the pain, inflammation and stiffness of arthritis.
This medication can help you to achieve those simple daily tasks,
like standing or climbing stairs, and through the night while sitting
or lying in bed, that so many people take for granted.
USES: Celebrex is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
medication (NSAID). It is known as a COX-2 inhibitor which is used
to relieve the symptoms of adult osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Celebrex can also be used to treat other conditions considered suitable
by your doctor.
BEFORE USING: Some other medications
or medical conditions may interact with Celebrex. You must inform
your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and non-prescription
medicines that you are taking. If you are taking an ACE inhibitor,
an anticoagulant, lithium, furosemide or fluconazole then additional
monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed. Tell your doctor
about any other medical conditions that you have, including pregnancy
or breast-feeding and allergies. If you have any questions or worries
about taking Celebrex, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
DIRECTIONS: The standard dose of Celebrex
for osteoarthritis is 100 mg twice daily or 200 mg daily. Patients
with rheumatoid arthritis should also start with these dosages. However,
some patients with rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from a 200mg dosage
twice a day. The maximum daily dose of Celebrex should not be more
than 200 mg twice daily. Consult your doctor, or pharmacist with any
queries that you may have about Celebrex. This medicine can be taken
with food or on an empty stomach.
SIDE EFFECTS: While taking Celebrex,
the side effects that may occur include diarrhea, gas, nausea, indigestion,
mild stomach pain, or headaches. If any of these side effects continue
or become troublesome, consult your doctor. If you experience skin
rash or itching, unexplained weight gain, bloating or swelling of
ankles, feet, or hands, vomiting material that looks like coffee grounds,
blood in stool or vomit, yellowing of skin or eyes, or unusual fatigue
check with you doctor as soon as possible. This medication may also
cause stomach bleeding. If so, consult your doctor immediately. If
you experience swelling of the face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue,
or if you develop hoarseness or difficulty in swallowing or breathing,
consult your doctor immediately. Consult your doctor or pharmacist
if you notice any other effects that are not listed here.
PRECAUTIONS: Celebrex must not be taken
if you have suffered a severe allergic reaction to aspirin (or any
medicine containing aspirin). Neither should this mefdicine be taken
if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drug (such as Feldene, Naprosyn, Motrin, Clinoril). Celebrex must
not be taken if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a sulfonamide
antibiotic (such as Septra DS, Bactrim DS, Gantrisin). Severe reactions
includes a severe hives, rash, breathing difficulties, or dizziness.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure as to whether
you are allergic to this medicine. Consult your doctor immediately
if you experience difficulty breathing, tightness of chest, swelling
of eyelids, face, or lips, or if you develop a rash or hives. If you
develop any of these reactions, stop taking the medication immediately,
until you have consulted your doctor. Do not take this medication
for longer than prescribed or exceed the recommended dose of Celebex.
While using this medicine, you should keep all doctor and laboratory
appointments. Do not take this medicine without first discussing it
with your doctor if you consume alcohol on a daily basis. Drinking
alcohol while taking this medication may increase your risk of stomach
bleeding. Before taking any new prescription or non-prescription medicine,
you should check with your doctor or pharmacist (this includes any
medicines that contain aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or ketoprofen).
For women that are planning on becoming pregnant, consult your doctor
about the benefits and risks of using this medication during your
pregnancy. Do not breast feed while taking this medicine as it is
not known whether or it is excreted in breast milk.
NOTES: This
medicine should not be shared with others. This medicine should not
be used for any other health conditions. Keep this medicine out of
the reach of children. Obtain refills of Celebrex before your supply
runs out if you are using it for an extended period of time.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose of this
medicine, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your
next dose of Celebrex, skip the missed dose and return to your normal
dosing schedule. Never take 2 doses at once.
STORAGE: Celebrex should be stored at
room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F, or 15 and 30 degrees
C) in a tightly-closed container. It should be kept away from heat
and light.
