Tri-Cyclen (Birth Control Pill)

| USES: Ortho-tri-cyclen
is an combination of estrogen and progestin which is used to
prevent pregnancy. This medication can also be used to treat
symptoms of menopause, to regulate the menstrual cycle or treat
other conditions determined by your doctor. |
BEFORE USING: Some medical conditions
or medications may interact with this medicine. Tell your pharmacist
or doctor of all prescription and non-prescription drugs that you
are taking. You must not use Ortho-tri-cyclen if you are also taking
nevirapine or rifampin. You may need additional monitoring of your
dose or condition if you are taking barbiturates, carvedilol, felbamate,
griseofulvin, corticosteroids, HIV protease inhibitors, pioglitazone,
penicillin or tetracycline antibiotics, modafinil, metoprolol, theophylline,
topiramate, troglitazone, troleandomycin, or any medication for seizures.
Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions that you have.
Also tell your doctor if your suffer with allergies, if you are pregnant
or are planning to breast-feed. It is bnot recommended that you use
this medicine if you have a history of heart or liver conditions,
cancer, pulmonary embolism, blood clots, cerebrovascular disease,
stroke, or if you smoke. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you
have any queries or worries related to using this medicine.
DIRECTIONS: To
use this medication, follow the directions given by your doctor. Ortho-tri-cyclen
is supplied along with a patient information leaflet which you should
read carefully. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any
questions about Ortho-tri-cyclen before using this medicine.
MISSED DOSE: You
should try to take this medicine at the same time every day, no more
than 24 hours apart. If you miss a dose of Ortho-tri-cyclen, take
it as soon as possible. Then take your next dose at the regular time.
You may take 2 doses of this medication on the same day. However,
if you miss more than one dose of Ortho-tri-cyclen, you should refer
to the patient information leaflet that was supplied with this medicine.
Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
STORAGE: This medicine should be stored
at room temperature, away from heat and light.
CAUTIONS: Smoking cigarettes is not
recommended while using this medicine as it may increase your risk
of stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure, heart attack or other
diseases of the blood vessels and heart. If, while using this medicine,
you suffer from vomiting or diarrhea for any reason, your medicine
may not work as well. If you use certain anticonvulsants or antibiotics
while using Ortho-tri-cyclen, the effectiveness of this medicine may
be decreased. In this case, to prevent pregnancy, use an additional
birth control method until your next period. Consult your doctor,
or pharmacist if you have any questions.You must inform your doctor
or dentist that you are using this medicine before you have any medical
or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery. Contact your doctor
if you wear contact lenses and you develop problems with them. Check
with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new form of medication,
either prescription or non-prescription. Using Ortho-tri-cyclen will
not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). You
must not use this medicine if you are pregnant, or if you suspect
that you may be pregnant. It is not recommended that you breast-feed
while you are using this medicine as it is excreted in breast milk.
Consult you doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS: Using Ortho-tri-cyclen
may cause dark skin patches to appear on your face. Exposing your
skin to the Sun may cause these patches to darken. If you do develop
dark patches, use protective clothing or a sunscreen when exposed
to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths. Other side effects, that
may go away during treatment, include nausea, bleeding between menstrual
periods, breast tenderness, vomiting or fluctuation in weight. If
any of these side effects continue or become troublesome, consult
your doctor immediately. You must consult your doctor immediately
if you experience recurrent or persistent abnormal vaginal bleeding,
a missed menstrual period, swelling of fingers or ankles, headaches,
dizziness or fainting or difficulty wearing contact lenses. If you
experience sharp or crushing chest pain, sudden severe headache or
leg pain, sudden shortness of breath, yellow skin or eyes, changes
in vision, numbness of a limb, or severe stomach pain, you must contact
your doctor immediately. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you
notice other side effects that are not listed here.
IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH: If you suspect
that you have taken an overdose of Ortho-tri-cyclen, contact an emergency
room or local poison control center immediately. The symptoms of an
overdose may include tremors, rapid breathing, restlessness, nausea,
vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.
