COMMON USES: Tenuate
is an appetite suppressant which, when is used in conjunction with
behaviour therapy and an overall diet and exercise program, can help
with the short-term management of obesity.
BEFORE USING: Some medical conditions
or medicines may interact with Tenuate. Tell your doctor or pharmacist
about any prescription and non- prescription medicines that you are
taking. You must not use this medicine if you are also taking guanadrel,
furazolidone, guanethidine, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
You should also tell your doctor about any other medical conditions
or allergies that you have. If your are pregnant or are about to begin
breast-feeding you must contact your doctor. The use of Tenuate is
not recommended if you have a history of heart disease, hyperthyroidism,
glaucoma, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure or brain or spinal
cord disorders. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any
questions or worries about using this medicine.
DIRECTIONS: This medicine should be
taken around midmorning, once a day, and should be swallowed whole.
You must not increase your dose of Tenuate or take it for longer than
prescribed as it can be habit forming. If you use this medicine for
an extended period of time, do not suddenly stop taking it. You must
first consult your doctor. Tenuate is usually taken for between 8
to 12 weeks.
CAUTIONS: The recommended dose of this
medicine must not be exceeded. You must not take this medicine for
longer than prescribed without first consulting your doctor. If the
recommended dose of this medicine is exceeded, or the medicine is
taken for longer than prescribed, serious side effects may occur.
While using Tenuate, you should keep all doctor and laboratory appointments.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicine,
either prescription or non-prescription. You must not drive, operate
machinery, or undertake any other dangerous activity until you know
how you react to this medicine. Tell your doctor or dentist that you
are using Tenuate before you have any medical or dental treatments,
surgery or emergency care. Tenuate is excreted into breast milk, so
if you are breast-feeding, or are about to begin breast-feeding, you
should consult you doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your
baby.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS: While using this
treatment, you may suffer from certain side effects. These side effects,
that may go away during treatment, include nervousness, difficulty
sleeping, restlessness or a dry mouth. If any of these side effects
continue or become troublesome, consult your doctor. If, while taking
Tenuate, you suffer from any other effects that are not listed here,
you should consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH: If you suspect
that you have taken an overdose of Tenuate, contact an emergency room
or local poison control center immediately. The symptoms of an overdose
may include tremors, rapid breathing, restlessness, nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea, and stomach cramps.
