Ultram

USES: Ultram
is an analgesic medicine used to treat or prevent pain.
This is a prescription-only pain relief medicine,
to be used by people who have moderate to moderately severe chronic
pain. Ultram is designed to help your body's system relieve pain.
It does this in two important ways. Firstly, as suggested by laboratories,
Ultram targets parts of the brain and spinal cord to reduce the
amount of pain. Secondly, Ultram reduces the size of the pain signal
which is passed between nerves.
This medication is unlike NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory
Drugs) such as ibuprofen. Ultram also differs from other pain medications,
like morphine or codeine. Ultram's mode of action is not yet completely
understood. However, laboratory studies have shown at least two
complementary mechanisms appear applicable. The first is the binding
of parent and M1 metabolite to opioid receptors. The other is weak
inhibition of the re-uptake of serotonin and norephinephrine.
BEFORE USING: Some medical conditions
or medicines may interact with Ultram. Tell your doctor or pharmacist
about any prescription and non-prescription medicines that you are
taking. If you are taking cyclobenzaprine or medicines for depression
or other emotional or mood disorders, then the use of Ultram is
not recommended. Make sure that you tell your doctor about any of
these medicines. If you are taking bupropion, narcotic analgesics,
or have a history of seizures, then additional monitoring of your
dose or condition may be required. You must inform your doctor of
any other medical conditions or allergies. You must also consult
you doctor if you are pregnant or are about to begin breast-feeding.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or worries
about using Ultram.
DIRECTIONS: To use this medicine,
follow the instructions supplied by your doctor. This medicine should
be stored at room temperature and away from heat and light.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose of
Ultram, you should take it as soon as possible. If it is nearly
time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your
normal dosing schedule. Never take two doses at once to catch up.
CAUTIONS: The recommended dose of
this medicine should not be exceeded. Do not take this medicine
for longer than prescribed. If, while taking Ultram, you experience
difficulty breathing, tightness of the chest, swelling of eyelids,
face, or lips, or if you develop a rash or hives, you must notify
your doctor immediately. Do not continue your use of this medicine
unless your doctor tells you to do so. Using alcohol while you are
using this medicine is not recommended as this medicine will add
to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. While using Ultram,
you should not drive, operate machinery, or participate in any other
activity that may be dangerous until you know how you react to the
medicine. If you use this medicine alone, with alcohol or with other
medicines, your ability to drive or to perform other potentially
dangerous tasks may be impaired. Consult your doctor or pharmacist
before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or
non-prescription. If you are planning a pregnancy, you should discuss
with your doctor about the benefits and risks of using this medicine.
Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine as it is excreted
into breast milk.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS: Dizziness,
nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, headache, or sweating
are some of the side effects that you may suffer, though they may
go away during treatment. If any of these side effects continue
or become troublesome, consult your doctor. If you experience skin
rash, itching, seizures, or hallucinations you must consult your
doctor immediately. If you suffer from any other effects that are
not listed here, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
POSSIBLE DRUG INTERACTIONS: Interactions
with other drugs can result in unwanted side effects or prevent
either medicine from doing its job.
IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH: If you think
that you have taken an overdose, you must contact your local poison
control center or emergency room immediately. Overdose symptoms
may include cold and clammy skin, low body temperature, slowed heartbeat,
drowsiness, dizziness, slowed breathing, lightheadedness, seizures,
deep sleep, and loss of consciousness.
