This is a non-steroid based anti-inflammatory
medicine (NSAID) which is used to reduce pain, inflammation, swelling
and soreness.
Vioxx is a drug designed for the relief of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis
is the form of arthritis which can be caused by age-related wear
and tear on bones and joints.
This medicine is designed for use in the management of acute pain
in adults. This pain is like the short-term pain you can get after
a dental or surgical operation.
Vioxx can also be used as a treatment of menstrual pain.
BEFORE USING: Some medical conditions
or medicines may interact with Vioxx. Tell your doctor or pharmacist
about any prescription and non-prescription medicines that you are
taking. Your dose or condition may need additional monitoring if you
are taking an ACE inhibitor, an anticoagulant, furosemide, lithium,
methotrexate, rifampin, thiazide diuretics, or warfarin. You should
inform your doctor of any other medical conditions or allergies that
you may have, including aspirin-sensitive asthma. You must also inform
your doctor if your are pregnant or are about to begin breast-feeding.
If you have any questions or worries about using this medicine, contact
your doctor or pharmacist.
DIRECTIONS: The
recommended dose of Vioxx, for acute pain syndromes and menstrual
cramps (primary dysmenorrhea), is 50 mg once a day for no more than
5 days. The recommended dose of Vioxx, for osteoarthritis treatment,
is 12.5 mg daily (although some patients may benefit from 25 mg daily).
You should not exceed the maximum daily dose of 25 mg. Vioxx can be
taken on an empty stomach or with food.
STORAGE: Vioxx should be stored at room
temperature (at 77 degrees F or 25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed
container. It should be kept away from heat, moisture, and light.
MISSED DOSE: If you are taking one does
per day and you miss a dose, you should take the missed dose as soon
as possible. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed
dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Never take two doses
at once to catch up.
PRECAUTIONS: You must not take Vioxx
if you have suffered from a severe allergic reaction to aspirin or
any medicine containing aspirin. Neither should you take Vioxx if
your have suffered from a severe allergic reaction to any non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (for example Feldene, Motrin, Naprosyn, Clinoril).
The symptoms of a severe allergic reaction includes a severe rash,
hives, dizziness or breathing difficulties. If you are uncertain about
whether you are allergic to this medicine (or if a certain medicine
is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug), consult your doctor or
pharmacist. If, while taking this medicine, you experience tightness
of chest, difficulty breathing, swelling of eyelids, face, or lips,
or if you develop a rash or hives, you must inform your doctor immediately.
If you suffer from any of these problems, stop taking this medicine
and do not take any more doses unless your doctor tells you to do
so.
The recommended dose of Vioxx must not be exceeded. You must not take
Vioxx for longer than prescribed without first consulting your doctor.
While using Vioxx, you must keep all medical appointments and you
are using this medicine. WARNING: If you drink 3 or more alcoholic
beverages every day, consult your doctor as to whether you should
take Vioxx or other pain relievers/fever reducers.
Using Vioxx may cause bleeding of the stomach. Consult your doctor
or pharmacist before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription
or non-prescription (especially medicines that contain ibuprofen,
naproxen, or ketoprofen). If you are planning a pregnancy, you should
discuss with your doctor about the benefits and risks of using this
medicine. It is not recommended that you breast-feed while taking
Vioxx as it in unknown as to whether it is excreted into breast milk.
SIDE EFFECTS: The possible that can
occur while taking this medicine include weakness or nausea. If either
of these side effects continue or become troublesome, consult your
doctor. If you experience itching or skin rash, swelling of the feet
or ankles, unexpected weight gain, vomiting material that looks like
coffee grounds, or blood in stool or vomit, then you must contact
your doctor immediately. You must also contact your doctor immediately
of you experience swelling of hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or
tongue, or if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, hoarseness,
flu-like symptoms, sluggishness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, stomach
pain, dark urine or pale stools or unusual fatigue. If you experience
any other side effects that are not listed above, inform your doctor
or pharmacist immediately.
NOTES: This medicine should not be shared
those for whom it was not prescribed. Vioxx should not be used for
any other health conditions. This medicine should be kept out of the
reach of children. If you use Vioxx for an extended period of time,
you should obtain refills before your supply runs out.
