This medicine is a prescription weight-control
medication, which can be used for the long-term treatment of significant
obesity.
Xenical is to be used by people who are overweight by at least 30
lbs, depending on their height or a BMI
over 30 (deemed considerably overweight).
Xenical is also suitable for people who are overweight by at least
20 lbs, depending on height or a BMI
of 27 or greater (deemed overweight).
Xenical is suitable for people who, apart from being overweight, also
have other risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
heart disease or diabetes. This medicine should be taken as part of
a reduced-calorie diet that contains no more than 30% of calories
from fat.
As Xenical blocks around a third of the fat in the food you eat, you
may experience gas with oily discharge. You may also experience increased
bowel movements, an urgent need to have bowl movements and an inability
to control them, especially after meals containing more fat than has
been recommended.
This medicine should not be taken if you are pregnant or if you are
nursing. If you have food absorption problems or reduced bile flow
then use of Xenical is also not recommended. You must consult your
doctor before taking Xenical if you are taking cyclosporine.
A daily multivitamin is recommended as using
Xenical reduces the absorption of some vitamins.
