Zyban® Information and Side Effects |  |
USES: Zyban
(bupropion hydrochloride) is designed to help you quit smoking.
HOW TO TAKE ZYBAN: This
medication should be swallowed whole. Zyban must not be crushed or
chewed as this will cause the sustained activity of the drug to be
destroyed. This would increase the chances of side effects during
treatment. This medicine should be taken as directed, normally twice
daily, for between 7 and 12 weeks. You must not take any more or less
medication than has been prescribed. As taking Zyban can cause sleeplessness
at first, it is recommended that you do not take Zyban near bedtime.
After starting your treatment with Zyban, it is advised that you continue
smoking for the first week, until the drug reaches higher levels in
your blood. You must not, however, smoke if using any nicotine products
with this drug. Levels of nicotine in the body that are too high can
cause serious side effects.
SIDE EFFECTS: Zyban is usually well
tolerated. Some side effects that may occur are a dry mouth, headaches,
increased sweating, constipation, anxiety and fatigue. If any of these
side effects continue or become worse, contact your doctor.
PRECAUTIONS: You must consult your doctor
before taking Zyban if you have a history of brain tumor; heart, liver
or kidney disease, seizures, head injury, an eating disorder or any
mental conditions. You must also consult your doctor if your have
diabetes or any allergies. While using Zyban, it is recommended that
you avoid or limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages. Using
alcohol while under this treatment can increase your risk of seizures.
If you are a chronic alcohol users, and suddenly stop the intake of
alcohol while taking Zyban, you may increase your risk of having seizures.
It is not recommended that you suddenly stopping certain tranquilizers
(for example, diazepam orchlordiazepoxide). Doing this may increase
your risk of seizures. Patients who are elderly may be more sensitive
to the effects of this drug. If you are pregnant or are planning a
pregnancy, you must consult your doctor. It is not recommended that
you breast-feed while taking this medicine as it is excreted into
breast milk. Breast-feeding while taking Zyban should be discussed
with your doctor as it would pose a considerable risk to the infant.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: You
must inform your doctor about any prescription or non-prescription
medicines that you may be using, particularly MAO inhibitors (for
example isocarboxazid, pargyline, phenelzine, selegiline, furazolidone
or tranylcypromine). You must also consult your doctor before taking
Zyban if you are taking any of the following:
Theophylline, levodopa, corticosteroids (for example, prednisone),
salicylates (for example, aspirin, salsalate), any seizure medication,
sedatives, ritonavir, tranquilizers/psychiatric drugs (for example
chlorpromazine), other antidepressants (for example amitriptyline),
isoniazid, chlolinesterase inhibitors (for example tacrine, donepezil),
morphine, and adrenaline-like drugs (for example pseudoephedrine).
The chance of seizures while taking Zyban can increase if you consume
excess amounts of caffeine. You are advised to check the labels of
any prescription or non-prescription drugs for caffeine content. There
is a certain smoking cessation product which also contains Zyban.
You must not take that particular product while using Zyban. Consult
your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or worries about
taking Zyban.
NOTES: This medication should not be
used by others for whom it has not been prescribed.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose of Zyban,
you should take it as soon as possible. If you are within 8 hours
of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing
schedule. You must never take two doses to catch up.
STORAGE: Zyan should be stored at room
temperature. It should be kept away from moisture and sunlight. As
with all medications, Zyban should be kept out of the reach of children.
